“It’s Never Too Late to Repent” In the book of Jonah, the king of Nineveh is notable not least because he immediately takes to Jonah’s warning to repent, and encourages his subjects to do the same. Who is this king who is so ready for teshuvah? One rabbinic teaching maintains that this is the Pharaoh of Egypt. Why would the rabbis want this repentant king to be the classically evil Pharaoh, and what can it teach us about the nature of repentance?
